Schools can help become innovative incubators for active citizens in our democracy by educating students about what patriotism is and how they can practice good patriotism. Additionally, schools should instil in their students the belief that every individual can be an agent for change and that their contributions to our democracy matters no matter how small.
Emily Smith is an Old Dominion University student majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies and will be graduating this May with a Bachelor of Science Degree in IDS and continue at ODU to get a teaching license in Special Education.
